I. Introduction: Setting off for the Land of the Rising Sun
The Euro Truck Simulator 2 (ETS2) community is constantly on the lookout for new, immersive driving experiences that go beyond the limits of the standard SCS catalogue. The combination of the Project Japan (PJ) map and the realism mods from D.B Creation currently represents the most demanding and detailed trucking experience available. Project Japan is a comprehensive, long-term project that introduces an entirely new continent and country – Japan – into the simulation. This expansion is being built at a realistic 1:10 scale, matching the scale of the European and American maps in the SCS truck sims. The switch to left-hand driving (Left-Hand Drive, LHD) and Japan's extremely dense roads represent a fundamental departure from European driving habits.
D.B Creation complements this foundation by perfecting the technical depth of the simulation. D.B Creation's main offering lies in improving the AI traffic logic, realistic vehicle physics and atmospheric environmental enhancements. While Project Japan provides the geographical immersion and the LHD rule base, the roads in PJ's 1:10 scale are often narrow and unforgiving of mistakes. The improved AI intelligence and the superior trailer swing behaviour (Improved trailer swiveling) of the D.B Traffic AI Mod are crucial to making driving not only more realistic, but also playably realistic.
The aim of this expert report is to set out the necessary steps and the critical load order for merging these two complex mod systems in a stable, error-free way. Only by meeting the correct technical requirements can maximum immersion in Japanese trucking be achieved.
II. Project Japan in detail: geography and the specifics of everyday trucking
The regions of the Project Japan Map
The development of Project Japan began on the north-central coast of Japan, with Toyama being the first integrated city. The map focuses on the central Japanese region of Chūbu, which includes prefectures such as Ishikawa and Toyama. Players currently have several starting points to choose from where they can set up headquarters. Examples include Kanazawa (with a Scania dealer), Toyama (with a MAN dealer) and Matsuyama (with a Volvo dealer). Choosing a starting location in these prefectures allows the player to begin their career right in the heart of Japanese logistics.
The Chūbu region, which includes cities such as Nagoya, Hamamatsu and Shizuoka, signals the map's enormous growth potential. The project is designed as a "long-time and large scale project" , which justifies the long-term investment in realistic traffic solutions such as those from D.B Creation, since these are automatically applied to future regions.
Driving challenges and immersion
The biggest driving challenge in Project Japan is undoubtedly the switch to left-hand driving (LHD). Unlike the familiar European motorways, Japanese lane changes, roundabouts and motorway slip roads require a fundamentally different approach. Another highly immersive element is the meticulously recreated Japanese toll systems, which regularly interrupt the drive and add a further level of realism that is often missing from the official SCS DLCs.
The combination of the 1:10 scale and LHD in densely populated areas, such as those found in Kanazawa or Toyama, means that tolerance for AI mistakes or unnatural braking is extremely low. This is where the need for the D.B Creation mods becomes especially clear. D.B Creation's focus on an improved AI safety parameter (Improved AI safety parameter) serves as technical stability insurance to ensure realistic interactions in these narrow urban environments.
Project Japan also offers optional add-ons to increase immersion. These include the A2.PJ150_addon_jp_company module, which replaces European company names with realistic Japanese companies. Another add-on is the Super Hard Company, which drastically increases the difficulty of parking by placing obstacles and making navigation unreliable in certain situations.
III. Technical foundation: the compatibility matrix (ETS2 versions and DLCs)
Version matching and DLC requirements
For stable operation, matching versions between Project Japan and the ETS2 base version is absolutely essential. Project Japan is strictly tied to the respective ETS2 updates. For example, the latest version, PJ v1.1.4, is designed exclusively for ETS2 v1.55. Using the wrong version – such as a PJ version for 1.50 with ETS2 1.51 – inevitably leads to malfunctions or crashes. Players must consult the official Project Japan website to ensure current compatibility.
In addition, all major SCS map DLCs are required for Project Japan in order to load and display the assets used correctly. The full list of required DLCs comprises eight expansions:
Going East!, Scandinavia, Vive la France!, Italia, Beyond the Baltic Sea, Road to the Black Sea, West Balkans, and Iberia. It is important to note that earlier PJ versions (e.g. v1.42 or v1.43) required only six DLCs. The increase to eight required DLCs signals expanded use of SCS resources in the growing map. Players who have used older PJ versions must check their DLC collection in order to use the current PJ version stably.
The D.B Creation system adjustments
Installing the D.B Creation mods requires an important manual adjustment in the ETS2 configuration file (config.cfg) to ensure stability and optimal AI function. This adjustment is particularly critical in order to avoid problems and crashes that can occur with high traffic density in Japanese urban areas.
The necessary parameters that must be set in config.cfg are:
g_traffic 1.0
r_buffer_page_size 25
The adjustment of r_buffer_page_size is directly linked to the increased traffic density (
Rush Hour) and the Higher distance of Traffic Spawn & De-Spawn of the D.B mods. Because Japanese cities are built very densely, the AI needs more buffer to prevent traffic objects from appearing or disappearing abruptly (pop-in), which is a common cause of crashes.
Project Japan critical requirements (integration of the D.B settings)
Critical requirement | Details and notes | Source |
ETS2 base version | Must match the Project Japan version exactly (e.g. v1.55 for PJ v1.1.4). | Official PJ website |
Required map DLCs (8 in total) | Going East!, Scandinavia, Vive la France!, Italia, Beyond the Baltic Sea, Road to the Black Sea, West Balkans, Iberia. | Absolutely essential for asset loading capability |
config.cfg adjustment (D.B) | g_traffic 1.0 and r_buffer_page_size 25 | Mandatory for stability and optimal D.B AI function |
IV. D.B Creation meets Japan: perfecting the simulation experience
AI behaviour in left-hand traffic
The D.B Creation Traffic AI is the ideal complement to Project Japan, as it addresses weaknesses of the standard AI in this unique environment. The D.B Traffic AI Mod offers realistic traffic intensity and an improved AI safety parameter. This is particularly important, as the standard AI often struggles with LHD-specific manoeuvres. The D.B AI improves the parameters for overtaking and uses different indicator timings, which makes dynamic and complex driving in Japan considerably more realistic and less prone to errors.
The AI also takes into account the physical limitations of long trailers. Thanks to the Improved trailer swiveling in curves for long AI traffic trailers collisions between AI vehicles in the narrow bends and slip roads of Japanese infrastructure are greatly reduced. The precise adjustments of the D.B AI are necessary to realistically master the challenges that the LHD structure brings in tight spaces.
Physics and environment: physical and visual authenticity
The topography of the Chūbu region, which includes mountain and coastal roads, places high demands on vehicle physics. The D.B Real Physics Mod provides more authentic chassis behaviour, realistic braking distances and a better feel for the vehicle's mass. This maximises the driving challenge on PJ's steep 1:10 mountain roads. For hardcore simmers, the combination of D.B Real Physics with the optional PJ
Super Hard Company Mod, which manipulates the parking logic , leads to a genuine hardcore simulation that goes beyond the normal level of play.
The D.B Real Weather and Environment Mods ensure that the visual effects and lighting moods on the Project Japan Map are always optimised. These mods overlay the base graphics of ETS2 and are designed to provide a realistic atmosphere independently of specific SCS updates.
Convoy compatibility and stability
The D.B Traffic AI Mod is multiplayer (Convoy) compatible , which allows groups to experience the improved AI behaviour in multiplayer mode in Japan as well. However, players should bear in mind the historical stability of Project Japan in Convoy mode: in older versions (e.g. v1.42) there were known crash spots, particularly near the toll booth
Hida Kiyomi, when AI traffic was enabled. Although newer SCS updates have fixed these bugs , it is recommended, if problems occur, to use the workarounds suggested by PJ at the time (disabling the AI or driving around the affected spot) until full stability is confirmed in the current version.
V. Installation masterclass: the critical Mod Manager load order
The correct load order in the Mod Manager is the most critical step for successfully implementing both mod systems. Project Japan explicitly warns that a mistake in the order can lead to malfunctions.
Resolving the priority conflict
A fundamental conflict arises because map mods (such as PJ) require that their MAP definitions (the highest file, A5) be placed at the very top. At the same time, D.B Creation requires that the Traffic AI Mod enjoys the highest priority, because it overrides the global traffic and AI logic, and this
must happen over all map mod files.
The technical solution, based on the logic of the AI developers, is clear: the D.B Traffic AI Mod must be in position 1. It enforces the improved AI traffic logic before the specific geometries and route definitions of the Project Japan map are loaded. The PJ map files follow directly below it in their prescribed order (A5, A4, A3, A2, A1). The table below sets out the definitive prioritisation.
The definitive load order for Project Japan & D.B Creation (top-down)
Priority | Mod type/group | File name (example) | Purpose and rationale
Priority 1 (highest) | D.B Creation Traffic AI | D.B's Traffic AI Mod | Must be at the very top to enforce the global AI traffic logic.
Priority 2 | D.B Creation Definitions | D.B's Vehicle Definitions | Global definitions for vehicles, loaded before the map.
Priority 3 | Project Japan MAP | PJ vX.X.X.scs (A5 − MAP) | The topmost component of the map itself (highest priority among the PJ files).
Priority 4 | Project Japan Model 2 | PJ vX.X.X.scs (A4 − MODEL 2) | Models and assets (part 2).
Priority 5 | Project Japan Model 1 | PJ vX.X.X.scs (A3 − MODEL 1) | Models and assets (part 1).
Priority 6 | Project Japan Asset | PJ vX.X.X.scs (A2 − ASSET) | Assets and resources.
Priority 7 | Project Japan Definition | PJ vX.X.X.scs (A1 − DEF) | Map logic and route definitions. Must be loaded below all models.
Priority 8 | PJ Add-On: JP Companies | A2.PJ150_addon_jp_company | Company renamings (for maximum immersion).
Priority 9 | PJ Add-On: Hotdog Acc | A1.hotdog_acc150 | Cabin accessories.
Priority 10 | D.B Creation Real Physics | D.B's Real Physics | Global physics adjustments.
Priority 11 | D.B Creation Environment | D.B's Environment Mod | Visual overlays (lowest priority for visual mods). |
VI. Starting the Japanese career path and immersion tips
Creating the dedicated profile
Using Project Japan absolutely requires a new, dedicated profile. This is not an optional recommendation but a technical necessity, because Project Japan uses a completely new map module that conflicts with the standard Europe module (europe.mbd). In the main menu, the profile manager must be opened and the "Create new profile" option selected.
After a profile name, an avatar and a truck manufacturer have been selected, the mods must be activated in the Mod Manager before the profile is finalised. The load order must correspond exactly to the prioritisation described above.
Selecting the map module
The decisive final step before starting the game is selecting the correct map module. At the bottom right of the profile creation screen, the map module must be switched from europe.mbd to Japan.md. If this step is omitted, the game will be unable to load the Project Japan map or will crash. After confirmation, the player can choose their starting point, for example Kanazawa or Toyama, and skip the introduction.
Advanced immersion
To complete the Japanese simulation, the use of specific Japanese truck mods is recommended, such as the Fuso Super Great, Isuzu GIGA or Hino Profia. These vehicles harmonise excellently with the D.B Creation Real Physics Mods, as they realistically reproduce the driving feel of these types of truck. In addition, visual mods such as the SnowyMoon Graphics Mod or Frosty Weather , can further enhance the landscape of the Chūbu region, provided they are placed below the D.B Environment Mod in the load order.
VII. Conclusion: the definitive ETS2 experience in Japan
Project Japan offers an unparalleled backdrop: a detailed Japanese infrastructure built at 1:10 scale, complete with left-hand traffic and realistic toll systems. This environment is inherently challenging and dense. The standard SCS AI is not optimised for these complex conditions.
The D.B Creation mods provide the necessary technical refinement by dramatically increasing AI intelligence through improved safety and overtaking parameters and by ensuring deeper physical authenticity through Real Physics. This makes the simulation not only more realistic, but also considerably more stable in Japan's narrow cities and on its steep roads. The success of this synergy, however, depends fundamentally on correct technical implementation. The mandatory version matching, meeting all DLC requirements and the critical load order – with the D.B Traffic AI Mod at the top of the priority list – are the pillars of a stable Japanese trucking career. Only by following these guidelines can the community achieve an ETS2 experience that is world-leading in terms of detail and driving challenge.
